Week of January 30 - February 3
What is your child learning this week?
In Math, we will begin working that the addition of three, one digit numbers ( 9+1+3). Students will be reviewing the making a 10 strategy to solve these equations. In social studies, we will continue our unit on Harriet Tubman. So far, students have been extremely engaged and interested in learning about her life! I will continue to pull my reading groups each day to focus on reading strategies and comprehension. Please remember, the expectation for students reading level at the end of this quarter is a level G. If you know this is a area your students struggles, please be diligent to read with them for at least 20min each night.

Addition Timed Tests
Just a reminder the last day for students to take their addition timed test will be Friday February 3rd.  We will then begin our subtraction timed tests Monday February 6th. Just like the addition tests, students will have an opportunity to win another gumball machine for their subtraction facts 0-10. These tests will be taken three times a week until the end of the school year. If I see that your child is struggling with a specific test over and over I will send home an additional copy and request that they practice at home.

A note from our fantastic Addison Foundation!

The Spring semester is here and that means lots of fun events from Addison Foundation to keep your kids happy and the Science Lab going!
Penny Wars runs January 17 - 27th with the final chance to take place at the Winter Wonderland Ball the evening of the 27th. Send your children in with pennies for their grade and silver and dollars to sabotage the other grades.  Pennies are GOOD, the rest is BAD because they're what subtracts from that grade's pennies!  The kids can drop them in the buckets each morning before school!  They LOVE Penny Wars!!
The first ever Winter Wonderland Ball for girls in grades K - 5 to dance the night away with their dad, grandpa, uncle, or favorite father figure is taking place January 27th from 6-9pm.
The next teacher auction items are coming too!  Bidding is now open -  Monday, February 6th from 2:30 - 4 is the After School Art Class with Miss Stoddard!  And taking place on Friday, February 10th from 6-8pm, a Girls' Night Out Shenanigans After School with Mrs. Hallmark!!  Check out the experiences and get more information at www.biddingowl.com/addisonelementary.  If any questions, reach out to Laura Glancy, President at lauragpta@gmail.com
As always, details can be found on the Foundation website at www.foundation4addison.org.  Thank you for supporting our Foundation's work to give us the Science Lab and other wonderful things!

January 17-20

Friday, January 20th is our 100th day of school! It is crazy how this year has flown by! Along with participating in several fun 100th day centers and activities, students are welcome to dress up as a 100 year old person. Some ideas to help your child look like a 100 year old might be to add some baby powder to their hair or wear a pair of "granny" glasses. I cant wait to see my class of elderly students! :)
*Please don't forget to send in the designated snack your child was assigned for 100 day snack mix*

What is Your Child Learning this Week?
In Math we will continue our unit on one more one less and 10 more 10 less.  The students will need to know how to add and subtract 10 mentally and fluently. During Phonics and reading we will be working with words that have the long O sound. In Reading I will continue to be pulling groups daily to focus on reading strategies, fluency and comprehension. Our new writing unit for this quarter is opinion writing. We will start the week off with Hero writing and then move into the structure of an opinion piece. In Social Studies we will continue to be learning about location and where we live on our planet. Thank you to everyone who has already helped their child write down their address in a agenda. We will be using those this week. To wrap up our week, we will have our first guidance lesson with our new counselor!

Important Dates:
Monday, January 16th: NO SCHOOL MLK DAY
Tuesday, January 17th: Penny Wars begin.  Bring in that loose change and help out the Foundation.

What is Your Child Learning this Week?
In Math we will begin our unit on adding and subtracting both one more/one less and 10 more/ 10 less. By the end of our unit, students will be expected to do this mentally and fluently. In Social Studies we will be learning all about location. This will include learning about our planet, continent, country, state, county, city, and address. Students must know where they live so please practice this with them at home. There is a spot at the front of your child's agenda that would be a great place to write this down for their reference. During our writing time this week we will be reviewing how to sequence events and begin our Hero writing. This week and for the rest of the year we will be working hard in our reading groups. It is extremely important that students are fluent readers by the end of 1st grade. If you know this is an area your child struggles, please be diligent to read with them for 20 minutes every night. We will end this week by learning about Martin Luther King to correspond with our three day weekend to observe him.
